Who We Are

Nova Built was founded by seasoned builders Shawn Ekker and Rick Szurgot, who believe the most important principle in a partnership is integrity. They believe the word ‘integrity’ is more than a buzz word. It embodies a philosophy of unwavering honor, truth—even when it’s difficult, and reliability that is all-too-uncommon. Nova Built is more than the company, itself. It is the product of the cultivation of relationships with many experienced subcontracting professionals who make our product possible. The goal of Nova Built is to not only make the building process painless, but to augment the experience to one of assurance, accomplishment, and joy.

Rick Szurgot

Rick is a veteran builder with an extensive resumé, and his competence is widely known. Prior to becoming a founding member of Nova Built, Rick was a leading project manager for a number of notable projects including over 6,000 residential units and many commercial projects valued over $20 million.

Rick is versed in medium-to-large scale construction such as hotels, multi-family structures, housing tracts, and industrial tilt-ups that range from tenant improvements to multi-million dollar turn-key builds including a national award-winning hotel in Zion National Park and the first five-story hotel in St. George, Utah. He has cultivated favorable working relationships with many of the very best subcontractors which are so critical to a project’s success.

Rick sets the benchmark of competence and resourcefulness. His ability to value-engineer projects from the design process to the construction phase is of great value to clients and investors to maximize a project’s cost savings and minimize construction time. His experience and efficiency pays dividends on every project to the benefit of everyone involved.

Shawn Ekker

Shawn attended Southern Utah University on a carpentry scholarship where he studied business management, engineering and english; but his passion was always building. He began his construction company at a young age to assist with college expenses and decided to make it a career.

Coming from a rural ranching background, Shawn learned the importance of hard work and frugality and exercises those principles in his business. Shawn has built a diverse portfolio of award winning residential and commercial projects, including a publicized luxury coastal home in Honolulu and a 320 student housing project at SUU.

Shawn brings a large skill set to the table with a unique ability to visualize a building to its completion and offer value-engineering options along the way. He believes there is always a way to make a structure perform better, cost less, or both. He has a passion for maximizing what can be done with building materials, both functionally and aesthetically, and enjoys a solid reputation built on his principles of quality, integrity, and reliability that is rare these days.
